Ahead of King Felipe and Queen Letizia’s scheduled visit on Tuesday, the Spanish police cleared the last migrant camp at Ceuta’s Guano beach on Saturday.

Several police vans arrived around 7am local time and officers directed migrants to leave their tents and sit in groups. Some migrants were also seen descending from the hills on the other side of the beach.

Police then escorted them to buses headed to a Centre for the Temporary Assistance of Foreigners (CATE) for identification and registration, according to local media.

Workers proceeded to clean up the camp, discarding troves of makeshift tents, mattresses and personal goods.

The move comes amid continued tensions over the presence of thousands of migrants living rough in the tiny enclave which is home to 80,000 people.

More than 72,000 crossed the border from Morocco into Ceuta in late July. While most of the migrants later went back, at least 10,000 remained.

The royal visit comes amid long-standing friction with Morocco, which claims sovereignty over both Ceuta and Spain's other North African enclave of Melilla.
